Saudi student funds cybersecurity studies through gig work

Abdulmajeed Al-Qahtani is pursuing a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, funding his education independently by working as a driver for delivery app platforms—a journey that highlights the initiative and self-reliance of Saudi youth.

Al-Qahtani told Ajel that earning a diploma in cybersecurity marked the start of his journey, emphasizing that the ever-evolving field motivates him to keep learning and developing his skills to build a strong career.

He noted that financing his studies was a major challenge, but he chose to take responsibility himself by working as an Uber driver, which provides both income and flexible hours that fit his university schedule.

Al-Qahtani starts his day early and organizes his time around lectures and academic commitments, making use of available hours to drive. He says that setting priorities and making the most of short periods helps him balance work and study.

He believes that self-reliance does not necessarily mean starting a large business, but rather making the most of available opportunities to achieve one’s goals. He adds that his experience has taught him discipline, time management, responsibility, and how to interact with people from diverse backgrounds.

Al-Qahtani advised young people: “Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity. Start with what you have, even if it’s small, and use it as a stepping stone toward your bigger ambitions.”

After graduation, he hopes to begin his professional career in cybersecurity, continue developing his skills, and earn additional qualifications and experience. He stresses that the most important lesson he has learned is not to wait for ideal circumstances, but to start with what is available and keep moving forward.
