Saudi waste authority sets standards for sharps containers in healthcare

The National Center for Waste Management (Mawan) has announced approved technical requirements for sharps waste containers in healthcare facilities, as part of efforts to enhance safety standards, ensure safe disposal of such waste, and protect workers from biological hazards.

The center stated that the specifications include a secure lid with a safe opening for inserting sharps, construction from thick, durable yellow plastic that is resistant to punctures and leaks, and a sturdy handle for easy carrying and transport.

Mawan emphasized that containers must be clearly labeled with the phrase "Sharps Waste" and display the hazardous biological waste symbol to ensure clear identification and safe handling.

The center called on all healthcare facilities to review the technical guidelines for these requirements on its website, aiming to support a safe and healthy environment for all staff and visitors.
