Arab League warns Houthi escalation threatens Saudi security, regional stability

The General Secretariat of the Arab League has strongly condemned the ongoing escalation by the Houthi militia, which has targeted several civilian and economic facilities in Saudi cities, resulting in injuries among civilians. The militia has also continued to attack commercial vessels in the Red Sea, threatening the freedom of international maritime navigation.

In a statement on Tuesday, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy said these attacks constitute an unacceptable assault on Saudi Arabia’s security and the safety of its citizens and residents.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed his full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and the Arab League’s support for the Kingdom in confronting any threats to its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also expressed support for the measures Saudi Arabia takes to protect its citizens and national interests, stressing that the Kingdom’s security is a cornerstone of Arab national security, and that the stability and security of Gulf states are integral to the security and stability of the wider Arab region.

The Secretary-General warned that continued Houthi escalation—including attacks on Saudi Arabia and threats to Red Sea maritime security—represents a highly dangerous development with serious implications for regional security and stability. He described these actions as blatant violations of international law, international humanitarian law, the UN Charter, and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as a clear challenge to relevant UN Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution 2216. He called on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities to deter these attacks and hold those responsible to account.
