EU condemns renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, urges peace efforts

The European Union on Monday reiterated its strong condemnation of attacks by the Houthi group on Saudi Arabia, expressing full solidarity with both the Kingdom and Yemen in the face of escalating violence.

Dubravka Šuica, European Commissioner responsible for Mediterranean and Gulf affairs, said the EU renews its call to resume peace efforts in Yemen, stressing the bloc's full support for UN mediation and regional initiatives aimed at achieving a ceasefire.

Šuica affirmed the EU's commitment to respecting and safeguarding freedom and security of navigation, amid ongoing attacks in the region that threaten commercial shipping.

Last week, the EU strongly condemned the latest Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, stating that targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure is unacceptable, and warning that such escalation undermines regional security and stability and hampers efforts to end the conflict in Yemen through a political solution.

The EU called on the Houthis to immediately halt all attacks inside and outside Yemen, including those targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea, and to comply with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The EU's position comes as international condemnation continues over Houthi attacks targeting civilians and civilian and economic facilities in southern Saudi Arabia, amid warnings about the impact of the escalation on regional security and stability.
