Saudi Arabia opens school in southern Gaza to support children's education

As part of the Saudi Popular Campaign to Aid the Palestinian People in Gaza, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center has opened Mecca School in southern Gaza, under a humanitarian initiative to establish and operate safe educational spaces.

According to an official statement from the center on its X platform account, Dr. Issam Abu Khalil, head of the Saudi Center for Culture and Heritage in Gaza, said during the opening ceremony that the launch of Mecca School represents a beacon of hope for restoring the educational process and returning part of childhood to children in a safe and stimulating learning environment.

He confirmed that the school will initially accommodate 1,000 students and create 32 teaching jobs, with capacity expected to rise to 4,000 students in the next phase. He added that this project reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, noting that the King Salman Center continues to implement relief and humanitarian projects—especially in education—based on the firm belief that investing in people is paramount and that protecting children's right to education is a shared humanitarian responsibility.

For his part, Dr. Ibrahim Ramadan, Director of Education in East Khan Younis, said the school’s opening is a significant step toward rebuilding the education sector and resuming the learning process. He expressed deep gratitude to Saudi Arabia’s leadership and people for their humanitarian support for the Palestinian people, emphasizing that education is a message of life and the foundation for building the future.

The ceremony featured musical performances, artistic displays, and traditional shows that were enthusiastically received by attendees, reflecting the deep fraternal ties between the Saudi and Palestinian peoples. The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting, followed by a tour of the school’s facilities to review its classrooms and educational resources prepared to welcome students and provide a suitable learning environment.

This initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing humanitarian projects in Gaza, led by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, aimed at supporting vital sectors—especially education—to improve living conditions for those affected and strengthen their resilience.
