Saudi Arabia welcomes UN Security Council condemnation of Houthi attacks, reaffirms right to self-defense

Saudi Arabia has welcomed the statement issued by members of the UN Security Council on Friday, August 7, 2026, condemning the missile attacks launched by the Houthi militia against the Kingdom since July 15, as well as attacks targeting commercial vessels since July 22.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Kingdom values the Security Council's emphasis on the need to adhere to international law and relevant Council resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 2216, and to respect Yemen's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.

Saudi Arabia also commended the statement's rejection of actions that threaten regional security and the rights and freedoms of maritime navigation, stressing the importance of addressing threats to the security of maritime corridors and international trade.

The Kingdom renewed its call for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in implementing relevant Security Council resolutions and to take a firm stance against practices and violations that threaten the region's security and stability, as well as the safety of navigation and international trade.

Saudi Arabia warned that the continuation of such actions undermines efforts to achieve peace in Yemen and the region, calling for more effective international action to implement relevant UN resolutions.

The Kingdom reaffirmed its determination to protect its security and sovereignty, stressing its right to defend itself, its citizens, assets, and facilities against any attacks targeting its territory.

Saudi Arabia stated it will take necessary measures to safeguard its security, ensuring that such actions comply with international law.

On the Yemeni issue, Saudi Arabia reiterated its continued support for Yemen's legitimate government and for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Yemen aimed at achieving peace, security, and stability in the country.

The Kingdom stressed the importance of supporting political efforts to end the Yemeni crisis and enhance regional stability, in a way that preserves the security and safety of maritime navigation.

These Saudi positions follow the Security Council's condemnation of missile attacks against the Kingdom and attacks on commercial vessels, with an emphasis on the importance of respecting international law, Security Council resolutions, and maintaining maritime security in the region.
