Saudi Food and Drug Authority launches first national food composition database

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority, represented by the National Nutrition Committee, has launched the Kingdom’s first national food composition database as part of the Health Transformation Program, a key initiative under Vision 2030. The database aims to provide accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information on the composition of foods and dishes commonly consumed in Saudi Arabia.

The database includes detailed information on nutrients such as energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, compiled according to scientific methodologies and approved quality standards. It is intended to serve as a national reference supporting health, nutrition, and research sectors.

According to a statement from the authority, the database will contribute to the development and updating of evidence-based food and nutrition policies, enable scientific research and studies, and enhance public awareness of nutrition and health. It will also support the food industry in developing local products and improving their nutritional value.

Additionally, the database supports digital transformation in health and nutrition by providing data that can be used to develop digital tools and indicators for assessing dietary patterns and nutritional status, thereby strengthening the integration of data, technology, and public health.

This initiative is part of national efforts to develop the food data system and support evidence-based decision-making, with the goal of improving nutritional status and quality of life in line with Vision 2030 objectives.
