Saudi Board of Grievances adopts AI governance framework alongside UNESCO forum in Riyadh

The President of the Board of Grievances and Chairman of the Administrative Judiciary Council, Dr. Ali bin Ahmed Al-Ohaydib, has approved a governance framework for the use of artificial intelligence systems within the Board of Grievances.

According to an official statement on the Board’s account on X, this move coincides with the fourth edition of the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, currently being held in Riyadh. The framework aims to regulate the use of AI systems in judicial and administrative work and on the Board’s digital platforms, ensuring their responsible and secure use, protecting data and information, and enhancing compliance with relevant national laws and policies.

Dr. Al-Ohaydib stated that AI ethics in Saudi Arabia "are no longer just theoretical principles, but have become an important part of national governance practices." He noted that the Board is working to leverage these ethics and enable its staff to benefit from them in judicial and administrative fields, as part of its efforts during the Year of Artificial Intelligence 2026 and in pursuit of the Board of Grievances 2030 objectives for leadership and impact.

It is noteworthy that last March, the Board of Grievances launched a document outlining the principles for using AI systems, aiming to regulate the development and use of such systems across its departments and to establish related guidelines and ethical standards.

The new governance framework is based on policies and guidelines issued by specialized authorities, as well as the Board’s own approved internal regulations. It includes mechanisms for review and updating by the Office of Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies at the Center for Digital Judicial Services, to keep pace with rapid developments in the field and to promote awareness of responsible use principles.
