Saudi forces launch strikes on Iran-backed militias in Iraq

The Ministry of Defense announced that Saudi armed forces, in coordination with US Central Command, carried out precise strikes on Wednesday against targets belonging to Iran-backed terrorist militias inside Iraq. The operation was in response to attempted drone attacks on oil facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Malki said the strikes followed the ministry’s earlier statements over the past two days about intercepting and destroying several drones that targeted oil facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh. The ministry confirmed the drones were launched from Iraqi territory by Iran-backed terrorist militias.

Al-Malki added that the strikes were carried out under Saudi Arabia’s right to self-defense as guaranteed by international law under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The targets inside Iraq were directly linked to the attempted attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

Saudi Arabia affirmed that it does not seek escalation but will respond to any aggression against the Kingdom.
