Environmental Compliance Center introduces early warning system for violations

Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Environmental Compliance has introduced an early warning system that allows facilities subject to environmental regulations to correct certain violations before penalties are imposed. This initial step gives facilities a set period to address infractions, encouraging higher compliance and helping them avoid financial fines.

Center spokesperson Saad Al-Mutrafi explained that the early warning approach is designed to promote voluntary compliance, giving facilities the chance to resolve non-compliance issues before punitive measures are taken. The focus is on prioritizing correction in cases covered by the new policy.

He added that violations eligible for warnings come with specific correction periods and follow-up procedures if not addressed. The process takes into account the nature and severity of the violation, its environmental impact, and any aggravating or mitigating circumstances.

This system provides facilities with a clear process: starting with a warning, followed by a correction period, and then verification of compliance. Penalties will only be enforced if a facility fails to meet correction requirements within the specified timeframe and conditions.

Al-Mutrafi emphasized that financial penalties will be scaled according to the type and seriousness of the violation. He noted that taking advantage of the warning period to correct issues offers facilities an opportunity to avoid penalties, provided they adhere to environmental regulations relevant to their operations.
