SFDA urges proper care for reusable medical devices

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has stressed that reusable medical devices and supplies require special care to ensure their safety and effectiveness.

In a statement on X, the authority explained that these devices are designed for repeated use, provided they are reprocessed according to the manufacturer's recommendations before each use.

The SFDA highlighted the importance of following specific steps, including cleaning, disinfection, packaging, sterilization, and technical inspection of the devices.

Examples of such devices include endoscopes, dental instruments, and surgical tools.

The authority recommended storing reprocessed devices in clean and appropriate locations to prevent recontamination, and not to reprocess devices intended for single use only. It also called for separating clean and contaminated devices during transport and storage.

The SFDA urged immediate reporting of any incident, complaint, or suspected contamination related to a medical device or supply through the National Center for Medical Devices Reporting.
