King Salman Royal Reserve achieves major success in vulture restoration

The King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority has achieved exceptional success and a significant impact that goes beyond protecting traditional species, extending to ecosystem restoration and biodiversity enhancement.

According to an official statement posted on the reserve’s account on X, these efforts are especially evident in vulture conservation programs, which include continuous monitoring of nesting sites, establishing safe feeding stations, and reducing veterinary, poaching, and poisoning risks.

These scientific and field efforts have led to a steady increase in vulture numbers and nesting sites. The population of the griffon vulture has surpassed 300 individuals, marking a 328% increase, with 83 nests recorded—a 295% rise. The cinereous vulture population has reached about 35, up 776%, with 10 new nests, reflecting a 900% increase.

The Egyptian vulture population has grown to around 37, a 1,750% increase, alongside the documentation of three new successful nests, indicating a return of nesting to the reserve.

These achievements are of major global significance, as the reserve encompasses five areas considered internationally important for birds. Its biodiversity data supported the designation of the Kingdom’s first Key Biodiversity Area, further strengthening the reserve’s leading role in environmental protection and maintaining natural balance.
