Energy markets expert Dr. Anas Alhajji has explained why Saudi Arabia is pursuing nuclear energy despite its vast oil and gas reserves.

Speaking to Al Arabiya, Alhajji said the main reason is that every country, especially G20 nations, needs to diversify its energy sources to ensure national and energy security.

He noted that electricity demand in the Kingdom, along with Vision 2030 and future strategies, will significantly increase power needs. Without nuclear and renewable energy, more oil and gas would be consumed domestically, reducing oil exports and revenue.

He added: “By using nuclear and renewable energy, more oil can be allocated for export, increasing revenues without additional investment in production.”
