King Abdulaziz University Participates in Research Study on 'Groundwater Decline'
Jeddah-based King Abdulaziz University (KAU) participated in a scientific research study addressing "the decline of groundwater", which was published in the scientific journal Nature.
The study, which dealt with the rapid decline in groundwater and some cases of recovery in aquifers worldwide, also reviewed the impact of this decline on environmental sustainability, examined the most important factors influencing this depletion, its impact on the agricultural mass, environmental and social changes, and the use of modern scientific methods to deal with these challenges.
The study drew attention to specific cases in which depletion trends were reversed after procedural changes, the recharge of the managed aquifers and diversion of surface water, demonstrating the potential to restore depleted aquifers.
The study is a valuable scientific material and reference for researchers in the field of water and environmental sustainability, in view of the size and importance of the topic it addressed.
Researchers from 10 universities around the world, including Saudi Arabia, US, Britain and Switzerland, took part in the research.
