Saudi Board of Grievances adopts AI governance framework to ensure responsible use

The President of the Board of Grievances and Chairman of the Administrative Judiciary Council, Dr. Ali bin Ahmed Al-Ohaydib, on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, approved a governance framework for the use of artificial intelligence systems within the Board of Grievances. The announcement coincided with the opening ceremony of the fourth edition of the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, hosted in Riyadh.

Dr. Al-Ohaydib stated that AI ethics have become a core component of Saudi Arabia’s national governance practices. He added that the Board of Grievances is working to empower its staff to benefit from AI in both judicial and administrative fields, as part of the 2026 Year of Artificial Intelligence initiatives.

The new framework aims to regulate the use of AI systems in judicial and administrative operations, as well as on the Board’s digital platforms. It seeks to ensure responsible and secure usage, protect data, and strengthen compliance with relevant national laws and policies.

Previous principles document and regular review mechanisms

It is noteworthy that last March, the Board of Grievances launched a document outlining the principles for the use of AI systems, establishing guidelines and ethics for their development and application within its departments.

The new governance framework is based on standards and policies issued by specialized authorities, in addition to the Board’s own internal regulations. It includes mechanisms for regular review and updates by the Office of Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies at the Center for Digital Judicial Services, to keep pace with rapid developments and promote awareness of responsible AI use.
