Arab League chief condemns attempted drone attack on Makkah

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy has condemned and denounced the attempted drone attack targeting Makkah, after Saudi authorities announced they had intercepted and destroyed the drone south of the holy city before it entered the restricted airspace. Fahmy stressed that any threat to the security of Makkah or the sanctity of Islamic holy sites is extremely serious, as such acts endanger the security of Saudi Arabia, the safety of its citizens, residents, and pilgrims, and provoke the feelings of Muslims worldwide.

The Secretary-General noted that this incident is part of an ongoing escalation by the Houthi militia, which in recent days has targeted Saudi territory, facilities, and civilian sites, further increasing regional tensions and threatening the security and stability of the region. He emphasized that the continuation of these attacks highlights the urgent need to halt this dangerous course, respect international law and the UN Charter, and adhere to relevant Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution 2216 (2015), which calls on the Houthis to refrain from provocations or threats against neighboring countries.

Fahmy reiterated that the security and stability of Saudi Arabia are fundamental to the security and stability of the region. He affirmed the Arab League's full solidarity with the Kingdom and support for all measures it takes to protect its territory, security, and the sanctity of Islamic holy sites, praising the efficiency and vigilance of the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces in thwarting the attempt.
