Saudi Arabia urges UN Security Council to uphold international law

Saudi Arabia has emphasized that adherence to international law and the United Nations Charter is a fundamental pillar for maintaining international peace and security, as well as protecting civilians during armed conflicts.

The statement was delivered by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, during a Security Council meeting on Wednesday focused on "Upholding International Law in Armed Conflict."

He stressed the need to protect civilians, civilian infrastructure, and humanitarian and medical workers, as well as to respect the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of states, and to refrain from interfering in their internal affairs.

Al-Wasel underscored the importance of applying international law without selectivity or double standards, and of strengthening accountability for violations, which helps reinforce respect for international rules and principles. He called for prioritizing dialogue and peaceful means, supporting mediation efforts to resolve and address conflicts, and mitigating their humanitarian and security impacts.

The Permanent Representative reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to promoting respect for international humanitarian law, protecting civilians, and supporting international efforts to achieve security, stability, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
