AIMajid bin Dhawi Al-Otaibi, known as Abu Sultan, passed away on Friday evening, seven months after losing his wife and children in a house fire in the Tuwaiq district of Riyadh.
Relatives, colleagues, and social media users mourned him on X, noting that funeral prayers would be held on Saturday, Jumada Al-Awwal 13, 1448 AH, at Al-Rajhi Mosque in Riyadh, with burial at Al-Naseem Cemetery.
The tragedy occurred at dawn on the second day of Eid Al-Fitr, when a fire broke out in the family home. The father was sleeping on the ground floor with two of his young children, while the mother and the rest of the children were upstairs.
Abu Sultan awoke to the cries of his youngest child, carried the two children outside, and cut the electricity. He then tried to return to rescue the others, but thick smoke prevented him from reaching his family.
At that moment, his son Bandar rushed inside to save his mother and siblings, but the flames spread to the stairway, trapping them all. They perished together.
The fire claimed the lives of his wife and several children. Others later died from their injuries, the last being his son Abdulaziz, who passed away in June after nearly three months of treatment.
The family's tragedy drew widespread sympathy across Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. The late lawyer received condolences from Riyadh Deputy Governor Prince Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz, the Minister of Justice, and several officials.
