UN warns of rising displacement in Gaza as airstrikes continue

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported a surge in displacement across the Gaza Strip, as ongoing airstrikes and shelling continue to cause civilian casualties, including children, and force more families to flee their homes.

UN relief agencies have expanded emergency humanitarian support in the territory, deploying rapid response mechanisms to address the urgent needs of families affected by bombing and fires, particularly those recently displaced.

Assistance provided includes shelter materials, blankets, water containers, clothing, and food aid, in an effort to alleviate the suffering of civilians impacted by the ongoing hostilities.

Challenges in debris removal and service restoration

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced the recycling and reuse of approximately 6,000 metric tons of rubble to stabilize soil, aiming to improve mobility and access to humanitarian services for residents. However, the agency noted this represents only a small fraction of the more than 60 million tons of debris accumulated since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023.

The UNDP highlighted that insecurity and access restrictions, along with limits on the entry of heavy machinery, spare parts, and engine oils, are hampering effective debris removal efforts.

Meanwhile, OCHA called for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, urging all parties to refrain from targeting them in accordance with international law.
