Saudi Arabia introduces permit system for double-trailer trucks to boost road safety

The Transport General Authority has announced that, for the first time in Saudi Arabia, a permit system will regulate the movement of double-trailer trucks according to requirements designed to enhance road safety.

In a statement on X, the authority outlined key conditions for operating double-trailer trucks on roads, including:

• Prohibiting their use for transporting hazardous materials or indivisible exceptional loads

• Adhering to the route specified in the transport permit

• Not operating in weather conditions that pose safety risks

• Stopping at all truck weighing stations along the route

Trucks must display the phrase "Long vehicle" in both Arabic and English on the front and rear, according to specified standards.

The authority stressed that violating permit conditions will result in the permit’s cancellation and a one-year ban on obtaining a new permit for the vehicle.

The Transport General Authority recently launched the service for issuing permits for double-trailer trucks on roads outside urban areas via its website. The initiative aims to facilitate cargo transport, improve road safety, and enhance the experience of companies by upgrading the services provided, as part of the authority’s role in regulating the road sector.

The authority explained that applicants can request permits electronically, following steps that include technical review and meeting all requirements. Applicants are notified once their request is approved, allowing them to print the permit and begin transport operations.

The authority emphasized the need to obtain the necessary permits before transporting goods on designated routes, in accordance with regulations governing freight transport, freight brokers, and truck leasing on highways, as well as the rules for operating double-trailer trucks.
