Jeddah renames Corniche Road as Prince Khaled Al-Faisal Road

Jeddah Municipality has approved renaming Corniche Road, which stretches from Obhur Corniche Street in the north to Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Road in the south, as Prince Khaled Al-Faisal Road. The move recognizes his national stature, service to the region, and contributions to its development and progress.

Naming this vital thoroughfare after Prince Khaled Al-Faisal celebrates his impact on the development of the Makkah region, highlighting his efforts to enhance services, advance development projects, improve quality of life, and modernize the urban landscape in line with Saudi Vision 2030 goals.

Prince Khaled Al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz is a prominent national figure in Saudi Arabia's administrative and urban development. His name is closely linked to the Makkah region, where he has served as governor, overseeing its growth and modernization, reflecting the region's religious, economic, and urban significance.

The renaming coincides with the upcoming Saudi National Day, which the Kingdom will celebrate on September 23. The occasion commemorates the nation’s unification and achievements, renewing pride in the country, its leadership, and its progress.

Choosing Prince Khaled Al-Faisal’s name for this occasion carries national and cultural significance. In addition to his developmental role in Makkah, he is one of the Kingdom’s leading poets, with a strong literary and cultural presence that has enriched Saudi poetry and is closely tied to national values and identity.

This naming brings together Prince Khaled’s national and cultural stature with the prominent urban location of the road, reinforcing the significance of his name on one of Jeddah’s main arteries and symbolizing appreciation on a cherished national occasion.

Jeddah Mayor Ihsan bin Abbas Bafakih described Prince Khaled Al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz as the “architect of development,” noting that his relationship with Jeddah is reflected in his administrative, developmental, and cultural efforts for the region.

He said: “Prince Khaled Al-Faisal’s supervisory and administrative roles include overseeing major infrastructure projects, developing waterfronts, and upgrading road and water networks since becoming governor of the Makkah region. He also directly supported transforming the Jeddah Projects Office into the Jeddah Development Authority in 2022 to enhance the city’s historical and urban status, among other key achievements in the region and its governorates.”

Bafakih highlighted the positive impact of Prince Khaled’s forward-looking vision, notably his 2017 call for Jeddah residents to elevate the city to world-class status through continuous planning and development. He added: “His cultural connection to Jeddah is evident in the planned launch of the Prince Khaled Al-Faisal Cultural Foundation in 2026, aimed at preserving and sustaining the city’s intellectual and cultural heritage.”

Prince Khaled Al-Faisal Road extends for approximately 17 kilometers, passing through the Al-Shati and Al-Murjan districts. It boasts a strategic location along the waterfront, hosting several hotels and tourist facilities, and passes by the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, a key venue for entertainment and events, reflecting the diverse uses and activities along this urban corridor.

The road is a major urban artery in Jeddah’s transport network, intersecting with several main roads, including Sari, Heraa, Prince Naif, and Al-Salam Street, underscoring its role in linking vital areas and facilitating smooth movement across the city.

Its importance is further highlighted by its proximity to the waterfront and its connections to residential, tourism, and entertainment zones, as well as its association with landmarks that form part of Jeddah’s urban and economic landscape.

Renaming the road as Prince Khaled Al-Faisal Road aims to reinforce Jeddah’s urban identity, honor figures with a lasting national legacy, and integrate their names into the city’s main landmarks, in line with Jeddah’s status as one of Saudi Arabia’s leading coastal and tourist destinations.

The new name underscores the importance of major roads in shaping the city’s identity and promoting its key sites, especially those along the waterfront and in tourism, entertainment, and economic zones.
