Milky Way belt visible in August skies, Jeddah astronomers say

The night skies over the Arab world will offer a prime opportunity to observe the Milky Way's belt with the naked eye throughout August, especially from dark locations far from city lights, without the need for special equipment.

Majed Abu Zahra, head of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, explained that the stellar belt is the side view of the Milky Way galaxy, appearing as a hazy band stretching across the sky. He noted that the absence of moonlight in the coming evenings will provide ideal conditions for clear viewing.

According to the society's account on X, summer nights are among the best times of year to see the Milky Way, especially when looking toward the galactic center, where vast numbers of stars, gas clouds, and cosmic dust are concentrated. To the naked eye, it appears as a faint, bright band crossing the sky, while binoculars reveal many clustered stars within it.

Abu Zahra added that the Milky Way looks different to the naked eye compared to popular photographs, as cameras can capture faint details and colors not visible to the human eye, and astronomical images are often digitally enhanced.
