Thumamah Middle Road upgrade in Riyadh advances with new tunnels and bridge

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City is pressing ahead with the development of the Thumamah Middle Road corridor, as part of its plan to enhance the efficiency of the road network and improve traffic flow along one of the capital’s key routes.

Currently, three tunnels and a bridge are being constructed at the intersections of Thumamah Road with King Abdulaziz Road and Imam Saud bin Faisal Road. The aim is to improve connectivity across the city, increase the corridor’s capacity, and reduce travel times.

The Thumamah Middle Road development project spans 10 kilometers and includes upgrades to major intersections, the construction of 11 overpasses, and five tunnels. These improvements are designed to boost the efficiency of Riyadh’s road network and enhance traffic service levels across the city.

The project aims to raise the corridor’s capacity to accommodate up to 200,000 vehicles daily, with three main lanes in each direction, facilitating smoother travel between the eastern and western parts of the capital.

Traffic management during construction

Fieldwork is accompanied by a comprehensive traffic management plan, coordinated with relevant authorities. This includes implementing temporary and improved detours, with designated alternative routes, supported by signage and maps to ensure driver safety and maintain traffic flow.

Part of the main and ring road development program

The Thumamah Middle Road upgrade is part of Riyadh’s main and ring road development program, launched by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. The program covers the construction and improvement of over 500 kilometers of roads in the capital, aiming to build an integrated, sustainable urban transport system that meets the city’s rapid growth and enhances quality of life.
