Nasi grass blankets Arq Al-Ashyakh dunes south of Rafha, boosts vegetation

The sandy dunes of Arq Al-Ashyakh, located about 130 kilometers southwest of Rafha, have been adorned with clumps of sabt grass, locally known as nasi, in a scene that showcases the richness of plant cover and environmental diversity in the Kingdom’s deserts.

Currently, Arq Al-Ashyakh is witnessing a notable spread of nasi, a perennial summer grass from the Poaceae family. The plant grows naturally in sandy soils and is distinguished by its high adaptability to harsh climatic conditions.

Experts have noted that nasi plays an important role in sustaining rangelands, serving as a natural food source for livestock and helping to improve soil quality and limit sand encroachment. Its ability to spread and reproduce supports ecological balance in desert areas.

Similarly, the widespread presence of nasi in Arq Al-Ashyakh reflects the plant diversity and natural resources found in Saudi Arabia’s deserts, in line with ongoing efforts to preserve vegetation and develop the environment.
