Riyadh Municipality boosts road and bridge maintenance with AI technology

Riyadh Municipality is continuing its efforts to adopt innovative solutions and technologies, utilizing robots, drones, and AI-guided vehicles that transform data into precise insights on the condition of roads, bridges, and stormwater drainage networks. This approach supports faster response times and improves the efficiency of field operations.

These initiatives align with national targets for "AI Year 2026," which aims for widespread adoption of artificial intelligence technologies across government entities. The municipality has prioritized these technologies in its development initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, leverage them in city management, and boost infrastructure readiness, ultimately improving the quality of its work and services provided to residents.

The municipality relies on the Kingdom's first digital surveying system to monitor and assess the condition of Riyadh's roads. Field vehicles equipped with advanced systems collect and analyze data and images using AI technologies to detect cracks and surface defects, enabling rapid and efficient decision-making for immediate repairs before issues worsen.

Robots equipped with specialized cameras are used to inspect rainwater and stormwater drainage networks, gathering and analyzing data to provide clearer insights into the internal condition of these networks, supporting preventive maintenance and early response efforts.

The municipality has also deployed smart technologies to inspect the cables of the suspended bridge in western Riyadh, monitoring the condition of 248 cables using drone-mounted cameras that provide comprehensive and accurate views during proactive maintenance, ensuring the bridge's safety and sustainability.

These efforts reflect Riyadh Municipality's strategy to enable digital transformation and build an operational system directly driven by AI-supported data, enhancing municipal asset management and supporting sustainable urban development goals in the capital.
