Transport authority launches permits for double-trailer trucks outside cities

The Transport General Authority has launched an online service for issuing permits for double-trailer trucks to operate on roads outside urban areas, aiming to facilitate cargo transport, enhance road safety, and improve the experience and services provided to companies.

The authority explained that interested parties can apply for permits electronically, following steps that include submitting the application for technical review and meeting all requirements. Applicants are notified of the review outcome, and upon approval, can print the permit and begin transport operations accordingly.

The authority stressed the importance of obtaining the necessary permits before transporting goods on designated routes, in line with regulations governing freight transport, freight brokerage, truck leasing, and the operation of double-trailer trucks on public roads.

Permit conditions and procedures

The authority outlined procedures for operating double-trailer trucks in accordance with standards set by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, covering vehicle weights, dimensions, and trailer specifications. Use of these trucks is restricted to specified roads and routes under a transport permit issued by the authority.

Applicants must hold a valid license to operate freight transport and ensure the truck has an active operating card registered to the applicant. The transport route must be specified, with roads that are divided and suitable for these trucks, taking into account gradients, roundabouts, intersections, and bridges.

The authority emphasized that all regulatory procedures must be completed for the use of double-trailer trucks, and that the vehicle configuration must comply with approved standards. Drivers must also be qualified to operate this type of truck according to regulatory requirements.

Permit duration and operational requirements

The authority stated that the transport permit is issued for a period not exceeding the validity of either the operating card or the carrier's license, whichever expires first. The permit includes details of the carrier, drivers, truck, configuration type, transport route, and permit duration, with the possibility of route modification upon approval by the authority.

Compliance with all specified requirements is mandatory for the permit to remain valid. Any violation will result in regulatory action, and the permit expires at the end of its validity period.

Regarding operational requirements, the authority stressed that each double-trailer truck must obtain a separate transport permit, adhere to the permit conditions and route, and not exceed the dimensions and weights specified by Saudi standards.

The Transport General Authority affirmed that this initiative is part of its efforts to develop and improve the efficiency of the land transport sector, facilitating smoother cargo movement, boosting the competitiveness of the Kingdom's logistics sector, and upholding the highest standards of safety and quality in road transport operations.
