Thumama Road a key Riyadh artery, capacity boost to ease traffic: journalist

Journalist Naif Al-Harbi highlighted the importance of Thumama Road in eastern Riyadh.

Speaking in a phone interview with Al-Ikhbariya Radio, Al-Harbi said Thumama Road is a main artery in east Riyadh, and increasing its capacity will help improve traffic flow and enhance the capital’s readiness for upcoming developments.

He added that the Thumama Road development project is part of a broader plan to upgrade Riyadh’s road network, which is essential given the city’s rapid growth in population, vehicles, and economic and urban activity.

Al-Harbi noted that Thumama Road is one of the city’s key routes, and its development is not just about improving the road itself, but also about ensuring it can handle future demand as part of an integrated network rather than as a standalone road.

The Thumama Road (eastern section) development project is included in the “third group” of the program to upgrade Riyadh’s ring and main roads, covering a length of 8 kilometers.

The project involves building three bridges, three tunnels, and four major intersections—Airport Road, Saeed bin Zaid Road, Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein Road, and Al-Sahaba Road. It aims to increase capacity to over 200,000 vehicles daily, improve traffic service levels, and reduce travel times and congestion.
