Al-Hasawi lime, a seasonal crop from the Al-Ahsa oasis, is experiencing growing demand in major local markets and fruit and vegetable shops, as well as being marketed across Gulf markets. This growth follows the adoption of modern packaging systems, the creation of a unified brand, and expansion into related industries such as the production of natural juices, aromatic oils, and high-quality dried lime.

Al-Hasawi lime is among the most popular summer fruits in Al-Ahsa, receiving special care from farmers to maintain its quality. This attention has earned it consumer trust and a prominent place among local agricultural products. The fruit is distinguished by its thin peel, high juice content, strong aroma, and balanced acidity and flavor. It also retains its quality when dried—attributes linked to Al-Ahsa’s unique environmental conditions and the expertise of local farmers passed down through generations.

Ongoing scientific and community support

The annual Al-Hasawi Lime Festival plays a key role in supporting the product, bringing together farmers, researchers, government and private entities, and investors. The festival helps promote the lime, encourages innovation, facilitates the transfer of modern technologies, and stimulates industries related to the crop.

Dr. Hossam El-Din Hussein Mahmoud, associate professor at the College of Agricultural and Food Sciences at King Faisal University, explained that Al-Ahsa’s climate is well-suited for producing Al-Hasawi lime, enhancing the region’s potential to become a leading citrus production center. He highlighted the vital role of research centers in developing and improving varieties, advancing irrigation and fertilization programs, providing technical advice, and intensifying agricultural guidance to boost productivity and achieve sustainability.

Diverse products and marketing methods

Farmer Ali Al-Ibrahim noted that Al-Hasawi lime retains its natural components and aromatic scent even days after harvesting, and its green color remains stable during storage for several months. He added that marketing begins after dawn prayers at the central fruit and vegetable market, where the limes are sold by the box or by the kilogram. He also pointed out the variety of products derived from the lime, including whole fruits, aged limes, jumayd, and dried and ground lime peels used in preparing foods and beverages.
