Arab League chief urges end to Israeli measures against Palestinian economy

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy has called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its campaign targeting the Palestinian economy, stressing the need to confront what he described as Israel's unlawful actions against Palestinians.

Fahmy made the remarks during a meeting in Cairo with Palestinian Monetary Authority Governor Yahya Shunnar, where they discussed the crisis facing the Palestinian banking sector as a result of Israeli government policies.

The Secretary-General’s spokesperson said Fahmy was briefed by Shunnar on the impact of recent Israeli measures against Palestinian banks, which violate the 1994 Paris Protocol and are aimed at strangling the Palestinian economy and isolating it from the outside world. These actions, the spokesperson said, have hindered foreign transactions, including the import of essential goods and the provision of electricity and water services.

The spokesperson added that Israel has seized Palestinian clearance revenues, with deductions now exceeding $6 billion.

Continued Arab support and international calls

Fahmy reaffirmed his full support for Palestine in the face of what he described as an Israeli plan to undermine the Palestinian Authority and tighten restrictions on citizens. He stressed the importance of the international community assuming its responsibility to confront these policies and uphold the two-state solution.
