Abdullah Al-Shehri appointed commander of multinational maritime defense alliance

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense has announced the appointment of Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri as commander of the multinational maritime defense alliance. The move comes as part of the alliance's foundational procedures and aims to enhance its operational readiness and institutional development.

The ministry stated that appointing a commander reflects the founding countries' commitment to completing the alliance's leadership structure, strengthening its ability to carry out defensive missions, support maritime security, protect freedom of navigation, and secure sea lanes and straits. The alliance also aims to support international trade and global supply chains within its area of responsibility and in accordance with its charter and international law.

Rear Admiral Al-Shehri will lead joint maritime defense operations, oversee planning and coordination among member states and with other naval coalitions, and implement joint activities and missions as outlined in the alliance's charter and reference documents. His appointment will also help complete the development of leadership and joint staff structures, enhance the alliance's readiness to welcome new member states and their capabilities, and initiate programs and initiatives to advance cooperation in maritime security, information sharing, capacity building, and training.

New members join as alliance expands

The Ministry of Defense also noted that the process of admitting new member states has continued since the alliance's establishment. Additional countries have signed the joint statement, while others are finalizing national procedures to sign the statement and charter in preparation for official membership.

The multinational maritime defense alliance emphasized that it is an open international coalition welcoming all countries that share its objectives and principles, and continues to receive membership applications. A forthcoming statement will announce the names of countries that have completed the signing process, reflecting the alliance's growing base and strengthening its defensive effectiveness.

Planners' meeting and ongoing establishment

Meanwhile, the alliance's establishment continues with a planners' meeting scheduled for August 12 and 13, 2026, to finalize institutional requirements and facilitate the signing of the joint statement and charter by additional countries, paving the way for their official membership.

The appointment of Rear Admiral Al-Shehri as commander marks a pivotal milestone in the alliance's formation, demonstrating ongoing progress in building its institutional framework.
