Prophet’s Mosque imam warns Houthis against repeating fate of 'People of the Elephant'
Sheikh Khaled Al-Muhanna urges piety and highlights the power of kind words in uniting hearts during Friday sermon at the Prophet’s Mosque.
Key Takeaways
AISheikh Dr. Khaled Al-Muhanna, imam and preacher of the Prophet’s Mosque, said the Two Holy Mosques hold great sanctity before God and are deeply loved by all Muslims. He stressed that "no criminal has ever approached them with hostility except that God turned their schemes to failure and brought them low."
He continued: Makkah is God’s Sacred House and the most beloved land to Him. God has promised severe punishment for those who intend grave sins there—so how much greater for those who seek to attack it, like the Houthi militia. God made the fate of the 'People of the Elephant' a lesson for anyone who follows their path.

He advised Muslims to be mindful of God, explaining that piety is the path to happiness in this world and the next, and the best thing a person can store for themselves. This came during his Friday sermon at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.
Sheikh Al-Muhanna explained that one of the blessings of this religion is that God has guided Muslims to excellence in words and deeds. The virtues that distinguish believers reflect the honor and goodness of this nation, and emphasize following the character of Prophet Mohammed, whom God described as having noble character.
The importance of kind words in a Muslim’s life
The imam noted that the Prophet was the kindest and most eloquent in speech, always choosing the best and gentlest words, avoiding harshness and obscenity. He added that kind words are among the means to Paradise, with the highest being the declaration of faith (There is no god but Allah), as well as remembrance, supplication, and teaching beneficial knowledge.
Sheikh Al-Muhanna affirmed that God accepts only good words, loves those who speak kindly, and dislikes obscenity and foul language. He cited the Prophet’s saying: "Nothing is heavier on the believer’s scale on the Day of Judgment than good character, and God hates the obscene and foul-mouthed."
The impact of good speech on society
He stressed that kind words help unite hearts, bring people together, and promote reconciliation. Choosing the best words protects society from conflict and hostility and closes the doors to discord. He quoted God’s words: (And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan sows discord among them.)
He explained that a good word can be the reason for reconciliation and raising one’s status with God, while a bad word can bring God’s anger. He called for controlling one’s tongue, verifying speech, and choosing what benefits people.
The virtue of kind words in dealing with others
Sheikh Al-Muhanna concluded his sermon by urging Muslims to seek refuge in God from Satan when angry and to address the poor and needy kindly. He emphasized that "a kind word is charity," and its virtue is even greater when it comforts a troubled heart or brings joy to someone in distress, referencing God’s words: (A kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by harm.)
