Saudi Arabia urges UN Security Council to act on Houthi attacks

Saudi Arabia has called on the United Nations Security Council to take a clear and firm stance against attacks by the Houthi militia, urging the Council to fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security. The appeal was made during an emergency session held in New York on September 11, 2026.

The statement was delivered by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, who strongly condemned the terrorist and criminal attacks carried out by the Houthi militia. These attacks targeted civilian and economic facilities in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran, resulting in injuries to 73 civilians, including women and children.

Ambassador Al-Wasel emphasized that the escalation by the Houthis poses a threat not only to the security of Saudi Arabia and its citizens, but also to international navigation and trade in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

Emphasis on enforcing Security Council resolutions

The Saudi envoy stressed the need to ensure the full implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions and to halt all forms of support that enable the Houthi militia to continue its hostile actions and attacks, which threaten regional security and international shipping lanes.

He affirmed Saudi Arabia’s legitimate right to defend itself, protect its security, sovereignty, citizens, residents, and national assets, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.

Consistent stance on the Yemen crisis

Ambassador Al-Wasel reiterated Saudi Arabia’s steadfast position toward the Republic of Yemen, based on preserving its unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He also confirmed the Kingdom’s continued support for reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Yemeni crisis, led by Yemenis, to achieve security, stability, and meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people.
