Food and Drug Authority oversees safety of discount store products, says food security chief

Shaker Al-Sharif, head of the National Food Security Committee, said the Saudi Food and Drug Authority is the primary body among several agencies overseeing the safety of products sold in discount stores.

Speaking in a phone interview with Al Arabiya FM, Al-Sharif added that food products are subject to various factors, including storage and its regulations. If these standards decline, some ingredients may change, and consumers are often not fully aware of how products are transported and delivered to them.

He noted that it is easier for consumers to identify spoilage in fresh foods, as signs are visible. He also pointed out that environmental health departments affiliated with municipal authorities conduct inspections, monitor products, and take samples for testing to ensure safety.
