Saudi crown prince meets Syrian president in Riyadh, discusses stronger ties

Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman received Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara in Riyadh on an official visit today, following an invitation from King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

The crown prince conveyed King Salman’s greetings and best wishes to President Al-Shara and the Syrian people, while the Syrian president asked that his regards and wishes for prosperity be relayed to King Salman and the Saudi people.

The two leaders held talks to review bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation across various fields. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments, emphasizing the need to de-escalate tensions, safeguard maritime security, and maintain global economic stability.

Both sides affirmed their aligned positions on regional and international issues, stressing the importance of joint efforts to reduce escalation, contain crises, and prioritize dialogue and diplomacy. They called for an immediate halt to any actions threatening the security of navigation in the Red Sea, Bab Al-Mandab Strait, and Strait of Hormuz.

During the visit, a memorandum of understanding on industrial cooperation was signed, along with a defense cooperation agreement between the two countries’ defense ministries. Additional memoranda covered agriculture and environmental protection, while agreements between the Saudi Fund for Development and Syrian counterparts included projects in infrastructure, health, housing, and financial services.

President Al-Shara expressed his gratitude to King Salman and the crown prince for their warm welcome and hospitality. The crown prince, in turn, wished President Al-Shara good health and further progress for the Syrian people.
