Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Chairman of theGeneral Sports Authority (GSA) has awarded the Russian professional tennisplayer Daniel Medvedev, Al-Dira'ayah Tennis Cup at its First Editionpresented by Saudi Aramco.
The tournament concluded its activities this evening afterMedvedev managed to defeat his Italian opponent Fabio Fognini in the finalmatch, to write his name as the first professional tennis player to win thiscup, which was hosted for the first time by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The tournament started last Thursday and lasted for threedays. It witnessed several matches between eight world professional tennisplayers who are considered to be among the most prominent and important starsin the world of tennis.
It is the beginning of a new era for tennis in the Kingdomwhich is expected to witness a significant growth in this sport in the comingyears, especially that it falls within the sports chosen in the strategy tosupport clubs launched by GSA some time ago.
Medvedev commented on his historical victory in thetournament, saying "I was very pleased with my historical victory in thefield of Al-Dira'ayah, I did not feel as cold as Fognini because I usedthis weather before, I thank all the champions of the tournament, and Iespecially thank this wonderful Saudi audience for their exceptional presenceand interaction."
