A Royal Decree approved on Monday a cabinet decision that brings in the General Auditing Bureau (GAB); under the authority of King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

GAB President Dr. Hussam Alangari also expressed his deep gratitude to King Salman on the approval of the cabinet decision.

He also said that the approval is a product of the "High Committee for Audit Institutions Development"; formed by a Royal Decree No.5130 dated 2/2/1439 H, that the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman chaired.

GAB will now have a direct line of reporting to the King; and become fully independent at the administrative and financial levels, read a GAB statement.

The amendments are in line with the International Standards of Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAI); as the UN General Assembly on SAI independence also required.

"SAIs can accomplish their tasks objectively and effectively; only if they are independent of the audited entity and protected against outside influence."
