German Foreign Minister Haikou Mas confirmed that reports of two oil tankers being attacked in the Gulf of Oman are a matter of great concern and could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region.

In a co-press conference with his Albanian counterpart heldhere today, he said that "any escalation of the situation is serious.These events could lead to escalation. We need to stop the escalation and allparties must contribute to it."

Two oil tankers were attacked in the Gulf of Oman onThursday, leaving one ablaze and both adrift, shipping firms said, driving oilprices as much as 4% higher over worries about Middle East supplies.

The Front Altair, carrying petrochemical feedstock, was onfire in waters between Gulf Arab states and Iran after an explosion that asource blamed on a magnetic mine. The Norwegian owner said its crew were safe.

A second Japanese-owned tanker was abandoned after being hitby a suspected torpedo, the firm that chartered the ship said. The crew werealso picked up.

Thursday's attacks were the second in a month near the Strait of Hormuz, a major strategic waterway for world oil supplies.
