Apple unveils iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max with advanced AI, new camera system

Apple today announced the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, introducing the most advanced professional camera system in iPhone history, along with major improvements in battery life and performance thanks to the new A20 Pro chip.

The main Fusion camera features 48 megapixels and a variable aperture, allowing for unprecedented creative control. New Pro controls let users customize their camera experience. The models also feature a smaller, more useful Dynamic Island and a next-generation vapor chamber cooling system for sustained performance.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers the biggest battery life increase ever for an iPhone, benefiting from Apple’s chip advancements and a larger battery. Both devices run iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and AI-powered Siri, providing a smart personal hub focused on privacy and security.

The phones are available in four colors: black, silver, glacier, and the new burgundy.

Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, with market availability starting Friday, September 18.

iPhone 18 Pro camera system

The new Fusion camera gives users greater control over aperture with six laser blades, making it easier to capture high-quality images in low light and achieve sharper background details.

Pro controls allow adjustment of settings like aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, with API support for developers.

The camera supports advanced features such as updated photographic styles, post-capture cinematic effects, 4K video recording with Dolby Vision HDR, and improved audio quality through Audio Mix.

Photo authenticity and AI features

Apple introduces the Apple Reference Image feature, which verifies photo authenticity via a digital signature for each pixel. Reference images can be viewed in the Photos app, with API support for third-party apps.

Metadata and SynthID standard support help identify images modified by AI.

The enhanced Dynamic Island can now display three live activities simultaneously, while Face ID continues to support device unlocking and authentication.

A20 Pro chip and superior performance

The A20 Pro chip is built on 2-nanometer technology, offering a six-core CPU with 50% faster memory than the A19 Pro and a seven-core GPU that is 40% faster.

It features a dual 16-core neural engine, totaling 32 cores, doubling AI processing power compared to the previous generation.

Both models include the N1 wireless chip supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, as well as a C2 cellular modem for higher upload speeds and 15% lower power consumption, with mmWave support in the US.

Advanced thermal management and long battery life

The A20 Pro chip uses packaging inspired by Apple Silicon M-series chips, with a vapor chamber three times larger than before, boosting sustained performance by up to 40%.

iPhone 18 Pro models offer up to 36 hours of video playback, and 45 hours on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Devices can charge up to 50% in 15 minutes via cable or 30 minutes wirelessly. Fast charging on the iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers seven hours of video playback after just five minutes.

iOS 27 and Siri AI

Both phones run iOS 27, featuring Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence for a more capable, interactive, and context-aware personal assistant.

The new technology enables features like post-capture photo enhancement and web page monitoring in Safari, relying on on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute for enhanced privacy and security.

Siri in the camera app can provide information and take actions based on what appears in the viewfinder, and users can type requests directly to Siri.

Apple Intelligence also makes apps smarter and more useful, allowing users to improve photo composition with enhanced Spatial Reframing, Extend, and Clean Up features.

The Image Playground feature now produces highly realistic images.

In Safari, the Notify Me feature helps users monitor web pages for changes—such as product restocks or price drops—and stay updated.

To protect user privacy, Apple Intelligence relies on on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, extending iPhone’s renowned privacy and security to the cloud.
