Eurasian turtle dove spotted in Turaif highlights region’s role as key migration stop

The Eurasian turtle dove was recently spotted in Turaif, in the Northern Borders region, as part of its annual migration route. The area serves as a major stopover for migratory birds, thanks to its geographic location connecting the continents of the Old World, as well as its diverse environment and natural vegetation, which attract both migratory and resident bird species.

The turtle dove is one of the most prominent cross-border migratory birds, spending summers in Europe and parts of Asia before heading south to Africa in the autumn, passing through the Arabian Peninsula and countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Nasser Al-Majlad, head of the Aman Environmental Association in the Northern Borders region, explained that the sighting of this bird species confirms the health and stability of the local ecosystem and reflects the ongoing biodiversity in the area. He noted that migratory birds help disperse seeds and enhance biological balance, making their presence vital for the sustainability of ecosystems.

Al-Majlad added that the turtle dove, a member of the pigeon family, is among the most renowned migratory birds and holds special historical significance for enthusiasts and hunters in the Arab world, particularly in the Arabian Peninsula, where its arrival marks the start of migration seasons and outdoor excursions.
