WMO warns of extreme weather hitting three continents

The World Meteorological Organization has warned of extreme weather impacting vast regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa, noting the occurrence of heatwaves, drought, floods, and heavy rainfall in these areas.

The Geneva-based organization emphasized the growing need for reliable early warning systems to address these severe climate events.

Record temperatures in Europe

The organization stated that "Europe recorded its highest average temperatures during June and July. July was also the second hottest month globally, with average temperatures 1.47 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels."

It added that "some Western European countries, such as France, Switzerland, and southern England, are experiencing their fourth heatwave this summer, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius."

Severe weather events in Asia

The organization further noted that "parts of South and Southeast Asia are facing heavy rains, flooding, and landslides. China has carried out large-scale evacuations ahead of Typhoon Dolphin, the thirteenth typhoon of the current season."
