Hybrid robotic surgery removes malignant tumor at Makkah hospital

A specialized surgical team at King Abdullah Medical City, part of the Makkah Health Cluster, has successfully performed a complex procedure to remove a malignant tumor from the gastroesophageal junction. The operation, which also involved reconstructing the digestive tract, was carried out on a patient in his fifties using hybrid surgery—a technique that combines the precision of robotic surgery with traditional surgical methods to suit the case and enhance outcomes.

The patient was discharged to continue recovery at home just six days after the operation, in stable condition and ahead of the typical recovery timeline. Globally, hospital stays following major esophageal and gastric tumor removal surgeries at specialized centers usually range from 8 to 11 days, depending on the patient’s condition, the type of procedure, and recovery progress.

The implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols played a key role in the patient’s recovery, helping to reduce pain and blood loss, accelerate the return to normal activity, minimize wound-related complications, and shorten the hospital stay.
