A study by Australian scientists has found that sugarcane extract contains compounds that help lower levels of harmful cholesterol and reduce the risk of vascular diseases.

According to the study, published in the journal "Frontiers in Nutrition," 47 healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 55 took part. Over six months, participants received either 500 mg of sugarcane extract daily or a placebo, with groups switching treatments during the study. This crossover design allowed researchers to compare the supplement's effects within each participant and minimize individual differences.

Data analysis showed that consuming the sugarcane extract, which is rich in natural polyphenols, was linked to reductions in very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), triglycerides, and trans fats in the blood compared to the placebo. These markers are considered major risk factors for atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

Researchers also observed that the extract caused changes in participants' gut bacteria composition, which may be related to improved metabolism. However, it did not have a significant effect on body weight, blood sugar levels, or inflammation markers.

The researchers emphasized that these findings do not suggest replacing cholesterol-lowering medications. However, they noted that polyphenols in sugarcane could positively influence fat metabolism and may, in the future, serve as a supportive measure for preventing cardiovascular diseases.

A recent study published in the journal Nutrients also found that polyphenols, anthocyanins, and resveratrol in blueberries and dark grapes are linked to improved cardiovascular health. Consuming these fruits was shown to help lower LDL cholesterol, improve vascular function, and reduce inflammation markers.
