Early detection key to treating bone tumors, says specialist
Most bone tumors are not cancerous, and early diagnosis greatly improves treatment and recovery prospects, a rheumatology consultant has said.
Key Takeaways
AIDr. Diaa Hussein, consultant in rheumatology, joints, and osteoporosis, stated that not all bone tumors are cancerous, emphasizing that early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and recovery.
Speaking in an interview with Al Ekhbariya TV, he added that most bone tumors are benign. He noted that it is not possible to distinguish between benign and malignant tumors based on symptoms alone, so patients require a thorough medical evaluation, including clinical examination and imaging, and sometimes a biopsy may be necessary.
Hussein pointed out that bone cancer is relatively rare, but it notably affects younger age groups, unlike most other types of cancer. He explained that there are around 60 types of bone cancer, and treatment varies depending on the type and location of the tumor.
He highlighted that persistent bone pain lasting more than several weeks and not improving with painkillers, swelling in the bone area, and difficulty moving are key symptoms that warrant a doctor's visit. However, he clarified that experiencing these symptoms does not necessarily mean a person has bone cancer.
