High uric acid levels linked to increased heart complication risk, expert warns

Cardiology professor and interventional cardiologist Khaled Al-Nemer has warned about the dangers of elevated uric acid levels in the blood.

Al-Nemer stated on the X platform that high uric acid (gout acid) in the blood is directly associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation and other heart complications, but is usually a risk indicator rather than a direct cause.

He added that monitoring uric acid is especially important for patients with heart or kidney disease, those with chronic illnesses, and people taking diuretics. However, he noted that lowering uric acid alone has not been proven to prevent atrial fibrillation or clots.
