The Ministry of Health has urged people with diabetes to consult their doctors before consuming dates.

In a post on its “Live Well” account on X, the ministry explained that while all dates are similar, their sugar content varies. As dates dry and lose moisture, their sugar concentration increases.

The ministry added that during the rutab stage, dates have a lower total sugar content—ranging from 35% to 55%—and are higher in water and fiber.

At full ripeness, when dates are completely mature, water content decreases and total sugars become more concentrated, ranging from 50% to 85%.

The ministry concluded that regardless of the type or ripeness of dates, moderation is key to gaining their benefits without excessive calorie intake.
