International falcon breeding auction highlights unique species and hybrids

The list of falcons on display at the 2026 International Falcon Breeding Farms Auction, organized by the National Center for Falcons at its headquarters in Malham, north of Riyadh, includes a variety of species and categories such as gyrfalcons, peregrines, sakers, and hybrids. Each type is distinguished by unique features in size, color, build, and performance—qualities that falconers carefully consider when selecting birds to suit their needs and purposes.

Samer Dhiab Al-Sulaimi, a representative of a local farm participating in the auction, explained that gyrfalcons are notable for their large size, robust build, and a range of colors from white to grey and darker shades. He noted that breeding farms develop different lines of gyrfalcons, each tailored to specific desired traits.

He added that peregrines are known for their speed, streamlined bodies, and pointed wings, making them highly valued by falconers for their flight and hunting abilities. Sakers, meanwhile, are recognized for their strength and their long-standing association with falconry and hunting traditions in the region.

Al-Sulaimi pointed out that farms do not only produce purebred falcons, but also hybrids that combine traits from multiple species. These include popular types among falconers and in falconry competitions, such as the gyr-peregrine and the mathlouth al-gyr (a specific triple hybrid involving gyrfalcon), among others. Producers aim to achieve specific attributes—such as speed, size, color, or performance—by carefully selecting breeding lines.

He also noted that differences among falcons go beyond species or category names. Falconers pay close attention to the breeding line, individual characteristics, family history, and the intended use of the bird, especially since requirements vary between racing falcons and those used for other falconry pursuits.

The auction offers falconers and enthusiasts the opportunity to explore a wide range of falcon species and categories in one location, and to learn about the experiences of local and international breeding farms in selecting bloodlines and developing breeding programs. The event will continue to welcome visitors until August 25.
