Professor Alexander Konkov, head of the therapy department at the Russian Biotechnological University, has warned that a sudden drop in blood pressure can be more dangerous than moderate hypertension, especially for those with high or normal blood pressure.

Speaking to Russia Today, Konkov explained that this emergency condition can be life-threatening, noting that many people underestimate the dangers of low blood pressure compared to high blood pressure.

The professor stressed that drinking coffee or eating dark chocolate, despite being commonly recommended to raise blood pressure, is neither safe nor effective in cases of acute hypotension.

He added that treating this condition requires appropriate medication under medical supervision, after identifying the underlying cause of the drop.

Konkov pointed out that causes of low blood pressure can include vascular or heart problems, endocrine disorders such as thyroid or adrenal dysfunction, as well as dehydration, blood loss, or certain medications.

He noted that internal bleeding is among the most dangerous causes of low blood pressure.

The professor explained that the greatest risk lies in tissue ischemia, where organs suffer from a severe lack of oxygen due to poor blood flow, which can lead to cell death in the brain, heart, or kidneys if the condition persists.
