Cardiology expert outlines seven key measures to reduce heart attack risk
Dr. Khaled Al-Nemer highlights seven essential factors for lowering the risk of heart attack, emphasizing the impact of ideal heart health.
Key Takeaways
AIDr. Khaled Al-Nemer, consultant and professor of cardiology and arterial catheterization, has outlined the most important measures to reduce the risk of heart attack.
Writing on the X platform, Al-Nemer explained that individuals who maintain ideal heart health in terms of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight, physical activity, diet, and non-smoking have an 82% lower risk of heart attack compared to those with poor heart health who do not adhere to any of these factors.
He added that for people with intermediate heart health, the reduction in heart attack risk is gradual and depends on their adherence to these measures, with a decrease ranging from 30% to 40% for those in the moderate category.
Al-Nemer also noted that severe hunger, according to scientific studies, delays sleep onset, shortens sleep duration, leads to lighter and more fragmented sleep, and alters sleep stages. This is because hunger activates wakefulness signals in the brain, particularly ghrelin and orexin, and increases neural arousal.
