Bahrain’s cultural sector strengthens national identity, regional leadership

Bahrain’s cultural sector has recently witnessed significant momentum, following directives from King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and with the support of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. These efforts aim to reinforce national cultural identity and invest in culture as a cornerstone for showcasing the kingdom’s modern image.

Key initiatives include the development of heritage infrastructure, most notably the ongoing restoration of 16 historic buildings in the city of Muharraq as part of the first phase of a major project. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, in cooperation with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, is leading this work. In parallel, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed 'Pearling Path' is being transformed into outdoor art spaces that narrate the history of pearl divers and traders.

Diverse cultural events and broad participation

Muharraq hosted the fourth edition of the 'Muharraq Nights 2025' festival, now a fixture in Bahrain’s national celebrations calendar, attracting wide local, Gulf, and Arab participation. Festival events spanned the 3.5-kilometer Pearling Path, from the Bu Maher Fort coastline to the Pearl Museum and the Siyadi Majlis, featuring more than 560 activities and 800 artistic, heritage, and folk performances.

The capital, Manama, also hosted the 'Hawa Al Manama 2025' events organized by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, highlighting the city’s rich history and cultural diversity. The program combined tradition and modernity, earning praise from both citizens and visitors.

Museums and visual arts take center stage

To further activate the role of museums, the Bahrain National Museum held an exhibition of cultural artifacts, including documents, manuscripts, traditional tools, and rare coins. The kingdom also continued its support for visual arts by hosting the 52nd Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition in February 2026, with more than 75 artists showcasing a variety of works that underscored the Art Center’s role in nurturing talent and fostering international collaboration.

Honoring national talent and enhancing leadership

Bahraini professionals in the cultural sector have received numerous regional and international awards in recognition of their contributions to museum guidance, archaeological research, and the preservation of intangible heritage. These achievements highlight Bahrain’s leadership in shaping and advancing the cultural landscape.

These initiatives demonstrate that Bahrain not only celebrates its history but also leverages it as a bridge to inspire national memory and strengthen its cultural presence. Supported by advanced infrastructure, community partnerships, and a clear cultural vision, Bahraini heritage serves as a foundation for human creativity and global distinction.
