Juniper forests dominate the natural landscape of the Asir highlands, spreading across the peaks and slopes of the Sarawat Mountains and forming a striking panorama where mountains blend with clouds and mist. These forests are among the region’s most prominent features, reinforcing Asir’s status as a premier natural tourism destination in the Kingdom.

The juniper forests cover vast areas of Asir’s highlands, especially in Al-Soudah, Al-Namas, Balsamer, Balhamer, and Tanomah, as well as in parks such as Al-Fara’a, Dalghan, and Shaaf Al-Wayman. Many other peaks and mountain parks along the Sarawat range are also home to these evergreen forests, which give the highlands their distinctive environmental character.

Vital ecological role and rich biodiversity

Reports monitored by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) from aerial surveys highlight the extensive reach of juniper forests, which blanket mountain summits and slopes and line scenic roads and panoramic viewpoints. Clouds often embrace the treetops and rocky formations, reflecting the richness and diversity of Asir’s mountainous environment.

Juniper trees help stabilize soil, prevent erosion, and preserve plant cover while improving air quality. They also provide natural habitats for many native species and birds, enhancing the region’s biodiversity.

Tourist attraction and sustainable conservation efforts

The juniper forests attract visitors, hikers, and photographers year-round, thanks to their mild climate and natural vistas where forests mingle with clouds and fog—earning them the nickname “Guardians of the Clouds.”

These forests receive ongoing attention through rehabilitation, reforestation, and protection programs for native trees, as part of national efforts to expand vegetation cover and conserve natural resources.
